Bright red lychee fruits hang abundantly on lush green branches, creating a vibrant contrast in a natural outdoor setting.

Lychee scientifically known as (Litchi chinensis) is a tropical fruit tree native to southern China and Southeast Asia. It is highly valued for its delicious, juicy, and aromatic fruit encased in a rough red skin. As global demand for exotic fruits grows, lychee cultivation is expanding into new areas.

⚠️ Note: The seeds of lychee contain toxins and should not be eaten. Only the fleshy part of the fruit is edible.

Lychee seedlings are young lychee plants that are typically grown from seeds, air layering, or grafting. Seedlings refer specifically to trees that are started from seeds, as opposed to those propagated vegetatively.

However, it's important to note

  • Seed-grown lychee trees can take 8–10 years or more to bear fruit.

  • Air-layered or grafted seedlings may begin producing fruit in as little as 3–5 years and maintain true characteristics of the parent plant.

  • Flowering usually begins in the dry season, followed by fruit set with the rains

  • Lychee Fruit matures in 90–120 days after flowering.

Types of Lychee Seedlings

Green Lychee seedlings in black plastic bags are arranged on soil, with vibrant leaves against a brown earthy background.

The easiest way to have a healthy, productive Lychee tree, is to obtain a quality, air-layered tree from a reputable source.

  1. Seed-Propagated Seedlings
    • Grown from lychee fruit seeds.

    • Genetic variation occurs, so the fruit quality may not match the parent.

    • Suitable for experimentation or rootstock development.

  2. Air-Layered Seedlings
    • Made by inducing roots on a branch still attached to the tree.

    • Produces a clone of the parent tree.

    • Preferred for commercial orchards due to consistency.

Grafted Seedlings
  • Involves attaching a desirable scion to a hardy rootstock.

  • Combines fruit quality and root resilience.

  • Less common than air-layering in lychee, but still practiced.

Prices of Lychee Seedlings

Factors Affecting Price of Lychee Seedling depend on variety such as Mauritius (most common), Brewster, and Hak Ip lychees may differ in price. Nursery reputationsince Certified nurseries charge more but offer healthier plants. The Location affects the Prices as prices in urban areas (Nairobi, Mombasa) may be higher than in rural nurseries. The cost of lychee seedlings in Kenya varies depending on the nursery, location, seedling size, and variety. Small seedlings (6 months - 1 year old): KSh 200 – KSh 500 .Medium-sized seedlings (1-2 years old, ready for transplanting): KSh 500 – KSh 1,200 .Grafted seedlings (high-quality, fruit-bearing varieties): KSh 800 – KSh 2,500+ .

Best Growing Regions for Lychee in Kenya

  • Coastal areas (Mombasa, Kilifi, Malindi).

  • Highland regions (parts of Eastern and Central Kenya with suitable microclimates).

  • Western Kenya (if temperatures and soil conditions are right).

Lychee trees are typically propagated by air layering, as they cannot be propagated effectively by seeds or grafting.

1. Seed Collection and Preparation

Use fresh seeds from ripe, healthy lychee fruitsEnsure you Plant them immediately after removing from the fruit, as they lose viability quickly .Make sure you Rinse to remove pulp and dry for a few hours.Do not allow seeds to dry completely.

2. Germination Process

Use a seed-starting mix or loose, well-drained soil, Plant the Lychee seeds 2–3 cm deep in moist soil. Keep them in a warm, humid environment (25–35°C) while Germination usually occurs in 7–14 days.

3. Transplanting Seedlings

Once the seedling develops 2–3 sets of leaves, transplant into a larger pot or nursery bag. Use a mixture of loam soil, sand, and organic compost for best results. Water regularly but avoid waterlogging.

Lychee thrives in tropical to subtropical climates with mild winters and warm, humid summers. Ideal temperature: 20°C to 35°C.Lychee Grows well at sea level to 1,200 meters.Needs 1,200–2,000 mm annually with a dry period for flower induction.Prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soil (pH 5.5–6.5) with good organic matter.Requires full sun for proper growth and fruiting

Mycorrhiza is a symbiotic relationship between a fungus and plant roots. In a Lychee orchard, mycorrhiza plays a crucial role by enhancing the nutrient uptake of lychee trees, particularly phosphorus, leading to better growth and fruit production, especially in soils with low phosphorus availability.

Fresh lychees with reddish bumpy skins and glossy white flesh are piled with green leaves, showcasing their vibrant colors and textures.

What are the benefits of eating Lychee

lychee fruits are highly nutritious and offer several health benefits, including: Rich in Vitamin C (boosts immunity and skin health). Antioxidant properties (helps fight inflammation and oxidative stress). Supports digestion (contains dietary fiber). May improve blood circulation (contains copper and potassium).

Can Lychees grow In Kenya

Yes, lychees can grow in Kenya, particularly in regions with Warm, subtropical climates (similar to their native China). Moderate rainfall (lychees need good drainage but also consistent moisture). Frost-free areas (lychee trees are sensitive to cold).

What do Lychee taste Like

Lychee has a unique, sweet, and fragrant flavor .In terms of Taste its Sweet, floral, and slightly tart (similar to a mix of strawberry, pear, and grape) While the Texture is Juicy and slightly firm (like a peeled grape).Aroma is Perfumed, tropical, and refreshing.

Tips for Lychee Farming Success

  • Choose air-layered or grafted seedlings if you want quicker fruiting and true-to-type fruit.

  • Provide a windbreak if growing in open areas, as young trees are sensitive to wind damage.

  • Keep young seedlings shaded in extreme heat until established.

  • Regular monitoring for pests and diseases ensures healthy growth.

  • To encourage flowering reduce watering before flowering season. Avoid excess nitrogen which promotes vegetative growth over flowering.

How To Care for Lychee Seedlings

1. Watering

Keep soil consistently moist, especially during early growth stages.Avoid overwatering, which can cause root rot.

2. Fertilizing

Apply a balanced NPK fertilizer (10-10-10) every 2 months during the first year.Incorporate organic compost or well-rotted manure for long-term soil health.

3. Mulching

Mulch around the base with grass clippings, leaves, or bark to retain moisture and regulate temperature.

4. Pruning

Start shaping the tree when it's about 1 meter tall.Remove weak or crossing branches. Maintain an open center to allow air and light penetration.

Lychee Fruit Common Pests and Diseases

  • Lychee Mite: Causes leaf curling and discoloration. Use neem oil or miticides.

  • Fruit Borer: Damages young fruit; control with traps and timely spraying.

  • Anthracnose & Leaf Spot: Fungal diseases controlled with copper-based fungicides.

  • Root Rot: Caused by poor drainage. Improve soil structure and avoid overwatering.

Challenges Facing Lychee
  • Long juvenile phase for seed-grown trees

  • Sensitive to drought, frost, and waterlogging.

  • Needs specific climate conditions to thrive—especially cool, dry periods to induce flowering.

  • Fruit cracking and poor set can occur without proper irrigation and nutrition.

  • Requires well-drained, slightly acidic soil.

  • Pests like fruit bats and birds may attack ripe fruits.

  • Young trees need protection from strong winds.
