The snake plant (Sansevieria trifasciata), also known as Mother-in-Law’s Tongue in Florida ,Texas, Arkansas ,Kansas, California, Arizona or the Saint George’s Sword, is a popular, hardy houseplant with upright, sword-like leaves native to West Africa from Nigeria east to Congo, the snake plant has become a favorite in homes and offices worldwide due to its unique appearance, low maintenance requirements, and health benefits.

The Snake plant is incredibly resilient, able to survive in low light and with minimal water they are slow-growing and can reach up to 2 to 3 feet indoors, with some varieties reaching 6 feet outdoors in warmer climates
Snake plant can be propagated by cuttings or by dividing the rhizome. The first method has the disadvantage that the variegation will be lost
Unlike some household plants Snake plants are on the top of the list of air purifying plants. The unusual thing they do is that they actually release oxygen at night though a process called Crassulacean Acid Metabolism (cam). They only open their stomata at night, to avoid dehydration.
The snake plant can either be potted or planted on the ground and although the cases are rare there are some snake plants blooming ,though people see it as rare as they have never seen a snake plant with flowers
It is also known as the "viper's bowstring hemp", because it is one of the sources for plant fiber used to make bowstrings
It will rot easily if overwatered and is commonly recommended for beginners interested in cultivating houseplants for its easy care
Having historically been in the genus Sansevieria, with the advancement in genetic research snake plant has been reclassified into the genus Dracaena .Lets look at a list of Snake Plant types

FAQ about Snake Plant / Mother In Law Tongue (MILT)
Image of a snake plant on a clay pot
The snake plant (Sansevieria trifasciata) is not scientifically proven to repel snakes. However, in some cultures, it’s believed that snake plants can help deter snakes from entering homes or gardens, possibly due to the plant's sharp, upright leaves or the fact that it emits a strong chemical odor that some believe may be off-putting to reptiles. This idea is rooted more in traditional belief than in scientific evidence.
Snakes generally avoid areas that are well-maintained, with fewer hiding spots. If you’re looking to keep snakes away, other methods like keeping your yard tidy, reducing dense vegetation, sealing entry points to your home, and using deterrents like sulfur powder or commercial snake repellents may be more effective.

Why is it called snake plant
The snake plant gets its name from its long, upright, and pointed leaves, which resemble the shape of a snake’s body or fangs. The leaves often have wavy or horizontal markings, which can resemble snake patterns, giving it a reptilian look.
What does a snake plant do spiritually?
The snake plant is often believed to act as a shield against negative energy. Some people place it near entryways or windows, believing it will block or absorb any harmful energies that might enter the space.
What are the disadvantages of snake plants?

Toxicity to Pets and Humans
Snake plants contain saponins, which are mildly toxic to pets (like cats and dogs) and humans if ingested. Consuming the plant can cause nausea, vomiting, or digestive discomfort in both animals and people. Families with curious pets or small children may need to keep the plant out of reach.
Root Rot from Overwatering
Snake plants are highly susceptible to root rot if overwatered. They require well-draining soil and sparse watering, as they are adapted to survive drought. Too much water can quickly cause the roots to rot, which may kill the plant.
Slow Growth
Snake plants grow slowly, which can be a disadvantage if you want a rapidly filling display or a lush, fast-growing plant. If you’re looking for a plant that will spread quickly, this may not be the best choice.
Limited Temperature Tolerance
While hardy, snake plants don’t tolerate cold temperatures well and can suffer damage or even die if exposed to temperatures below 50°F (10°C) for extended periods. They’re best kept indoors in colder climates.
Spiky, Sharp Leaves
The leaves of the snake plant are tough and pointed, which can be hazardous in close quarters, especially for young children who might trip or play around it. Its sharp tips can cause minor injuries if accidentally brushed against or fallen onto.

How many snake plants should be in a bedroom?
The number of snake plants (Sansevieria trifasciata) recommended for a bedroom depends on the plant’s size and your goals, especially if you’re aiming to improve air quality .For enhanced air purification, some sources suggest three to six snake plants, as multiple plants can filter a greater amount of air, benefiting from their combined effects.

Air Purification
Snake plants are excellent at filtering indoor air. According to studies, they remove toxins such as formaldehyde, benzene, xylene, and toluene, contributing to improved indoor air quality.
Oxygen Production
Unlike most plants, snake plants continue to release oxygen even at night, which can help improve air quality in bedrooms and other enclosed spaces.
Low Maintenance
Snake plants thrive on neglect, making them an ideal plant for beginners and busy individuals. They require little watering and can tolerate a range of lighting conditions.
How to care for snake plant

Light
Snake Plant prefer indirect sunlight but can survive in low-light areas. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch their leaves.
Water
Allow the soil to dry completely between waterings. Overwatering can cause root rot for the snake plant , so it’s best to water sparingly.
Soil
A well-draining potting mix is essential. A cactus or succulent mix works well for snake plants.
Temperature
Snake plant do best in warm temperatures (60–85°F) and should be kept away from drafts or cold windows in winter.

Does Snake Plant releases oxygen during the night
Yes, the snake plant is one of the few plants that releases oxygen at night. Unlike most plants that undergo photosynthesis during the day and release oxygen only in sunlight, snake plants can perform a form of photosynthesis known as Crassulacean Acid Metabolism (CAM). This allows them to absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen even in the absence of light.
A floppy snake plant can be caused by several issues, most often related to :
Watering as Snake plants are very susceptible to overwatering excess moisture can lead to root rot always allow the soil to dry out completely between watering,
Lighting while snake plants tolerate low light, insufficient light over time can weaken the leaves, causing them to lean or flop.Place the plant in indirect, bright light, if possible.
Poor Drainage If the pot doesn’t have proper drainage, excess water can accumulate, causing the roots to rot and making the plant floppy.
Snake Plant Common Issues
Yellowing Leaves
Often due to overwatering.
Root Rot
Results from poorly draining soil or excessive watering.
Pests
They are relatively pest-resistant but can occasionally attract mealybugs or spider mites.
How To Plant Snake Plant
We are going to look at the various ways on how to Propagate a snake plant
Cut the snake plant into a V shape at the bottom .Then Use Perlite instead of water to let them rot faster
Let the snake plant callus over before putting in water. I put mine in aquarium water and the roots are crazy!
Cut a V shaped at the bottom to increase surface area for roots then plant it over soil rather than water
Cut at an angle then let it dry out for a long time, then as the top starts browning, you can place in water
To enhance root sprouting you add a mixture of yeast and nrown sugar which acts as a home made root stimulant
A stalk of snake plant gives around 5-6 pieces ,while propagating keep the snake plant watered not soaked
Once the tip is broken, the leaf won’t grow any taller but it can continue to live like that and produce babies.
